Building Faith in God Through Silence and Solitude: Quiet Time With God

Life is full of noise—our phones buzz, schedules overflow, and the quiet moments we long for often slip away. Yet one of the most life-giving ways to build strong faith in God is to step into silence and solitude. In the stillness, God has space to remind us of His presence, His promises, and His love.

This post is part of my Building Faith in God series. In the introductory post, I shared 8 simple ways to grow your faith. We’ve already looked at how Scripture brings daily encouragement through a Faith Board. Today, I want to share how silence and solitude have been reshaping my own walk with God.

Learning to Hear God’s Voice 🌿

Lately, God has been teaching me that faith isn’t only about gaining more knowledge—it’s about deepening a relationship with Him. That shift hasn’t been easy for me. I’m more of an “action girl” by nature, always wanting to do something. Sitting still has never come naturally.

But in silence and solitude, I’m learning to slow down and simply be with God. Not rushing through Scripture to check off a box, but allowing His Word to settle into my heart. Not trying to figure everything out, but waiting to hear His voice.

I started reading, yet, another book - Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God by Dallas Willard. Just a few pages in, this gem of a goal came to light...

This thought has totally transformed how I look at inAWE. I've always considered it a ministry, but as a collaboration with God Himself?!?  Nope! This was far from my ability to think about or imagine.

But it is now becoming the way I "conduct" the business of inAWE. It is still a work-in-progress (and likely always will be), but it has lifted a burden from my shoulders. Who wouldn't feel lighter if their business parter was the God of the heavens?!

So, I've invited Him to join me in a new and exciting way. While drinking my first cup of coffee each morning, I thank Him for the gift of inAWE and ask that He guide, lead and bless it according to His will. I acknowledge that He is with me every step of the day and commit to listening for Him in my daily activities.

The very first morning that I started this new way of starting my day, He showed up. I was researching keywords for a product that is near and dear to my heart - our Book of Truth. You can read about its origin and why it's special in this post.

For years, I have been trying to help our customers find this product because I believe it is a great gift.

While I was doing research, God impressed a keyword on my heart that I hadn’t considered before. It was exactly what I needed to help more people discover the Book of Truth because it's what I have dubbed -  golden - because it has a high number of searches, healthy engagement and low competition. (These "golden" keywords don't come around often. I've probably found less than 10 in all the years I've been in business.) I believe He gave me that word so this little book can encourage others the way it’s encouraged my family. (It's too early to see, but I have high expectations.)

Silence and solitude are still stretching me, but they are teaching me that God speaks in gentle, practical, and deeply personal ways. And each time I hear Him, my faith grows stronger.

Why Silence and Solitude Build Faith

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Silence clears away the noise. When the distractions fade, God’s Word and Spirit come into focus.

  • Solitude gives space to reflect. Time alone with God lets His truth sink deeper than a quick prayer on the go.

  • Stillness teaches surrender. Quieting my heart reminds me I’m not in control—God is.

  • Listening builds trust. Each time I hear God’s whisper, my faith grows stronger, knowing He is present and guiding me.

Encouragement for You ✨

Maybe silence feels intimidating, or solitude sounds impossible with all that’s on your plate. Start small.

  • Set aside 5 minutes in the morning or before bed.

  • Read one verse slowly, then sit in quiet with it.

  • Ask God to speak—and listen without rushing.

You might be surprised at how those few quiet moments shift your whole day.

These two quotes from Pete Greig in How to Hear God remind me of all that we stand to gain from the practice of silence and solitude:

The practices of silence and solitude aren’t empty or wasted—they’re sacred spaces where our hearts are tuned to hear the gentle voice of God. The more we learn to hear from God, the greater our faith will become.

Closing Thoughts 💛

Silence and solitude may not come naturally—especially for those of us who feel wired for action—but they open sacred space for God’s presence. In stillness, we’re reminded that His voice isn’t rushed or loud; it comes gently when we slow down enough to listen.

If creating that quiet space feels overwhelming, you don’t have to do it alone. I’ve found the Lectio 365 app to be a helpful guide in carving out daily moments of reflection and prayer. Here's a YouTube Short about how God used it to teach me something new about faith (or the lack of it). Even a few minutes with God—reading Scripture, sitting quietly, and listening—can strengthen your faith and bring peace into your day.
